WIP: A cake for Grandpa

A friend's grandpa would be celebrating is 83rd birthday this coming weekend. Her wish was to have a cake to commemorate the day and also be personalised to her beloved grandpa.

She said her grandpa loves the grandchildren; and he has 2; a girl and a boy.

That became the inspiration for the cake topper.

The topper's now left to harden. Cake will be made later in the week :)

Pick me up

Tiramisu (Italian: Tiramisù / Veneto: Tiramesù, IPA: [tirame'su]) is one of the most popular Italian desserts. It is made of savoiardi (lady fingers) dipped in coffee and mascarpone cream. For many years, different sources (from Vin Veneto, dated 1981, to the Italian Academy of Giuseppe Maffioli and several cuisine websites) give evidence that tiramisu was born in Treviso at "Le Beccherie" restaurant in the hands of the confectioner Roberto Linguanotto, also known as Loli. Different stories report the creation of the cake to have been born in the city of Siena. Some confectioners were said to have created it in honour of Cosimo III on the occasion of his visit to the city. These days, the cake is characterised by a delicate and intense taste. In order to prepare it, according to the original recipe, the following ingredients are needed: Savoiardi biscuits, eggs, sugar, rum and cocoa. In the original recipe, there was no liquor as the cake was originally aimed at children and the elderly and the original shape was round. The name Tiramisu is from Italian and means "pick me up" (Tirami su) but can be translated figuratively as "make me less sad/happier".

There has been many variations to this classic. Cakes, Ice Creams, Cookies.. you name if they've got it.

However, this time, I wanted to try the more authentic style. Here's the recipe:

*snap snap*

'Twas a friend's birthday... but he isn't much a fan of cake (*shocking, I know!*). However, his better half did say he liked chocolate mud cake. I wasn't sure of how a Chocolate Mud cake would be like.. but it's sure gotta be gooey and chocalatey.

So I adapted the chocolate cake recipe I had, and steamed it! Yes, steam. I've done it for Mother's Day (will show in another post). This time however I went with half recipe, coz I wanted to make a cute small one for him.

He's also a photography fan. And that became the inspiration for the topper.

A camera, with a picture in a frame on a chequered mat.

I know the straps are generally black, but it would be so difficult to put the brand on :P

The back of the camera... with the LCD screen hahaha

Closer view of the picture. Such a scenic view, no?

Here's how the whole cake looks like.

Trying an artsy shot with my camera phone...

Here's how small the cake is

Cake : Chocolate moist
Filling : Chocolate ganache
Topping: Fondant

Marie biscuits...

No.. not this kind of Marie biscuit.. it's more of a cookie actually hehehe

Tray full of cats!

Recipe taken from Happy Home Baking: Smiles from the 100 Aker Wood. I must say it was absolutely yummy... and crunchy. Modification that I made was to add in about 1 tsp of vanilla essence.

Here's the cutter that I used.

Orange Attack!

It started with an orange.

And some poppy seed

And of course hands itching to bake... So this is what happened..

Plain old cuppycakes... that smelt like an orange burst in the room

Decided to pretty them up a little
(but lacked the inspiration that day)
Cake : Orange poppy seed with mandarin orange filling
Deco : Orange butter cream
hehe Told you it was an orange attack.
